Villa dei Misteri
red IGT
In 2001
there was the first conspicuos harvest, the first wine-making and the
refinement in wood of the first wine
at the ancient Pompeii, product in
just 1721 bottles.
The project was born in 1996,
when the Soprintendenza
Archeologica di Pompei
confered to the factory Mastroberardino,
one of the most prestigious and ancient Italian wine cellars, the
charge to restore the viticulture in the ancient city of Pompeii.
The
wine, in fact, had an important role in the life of the Vesuvian
populations. The archaeological investigations, the
botanical studies and the survey of the casts
of the roots of the grapevines and the relative stakes of
support (that the big eruption of 79 AD has “immortalized”
forever) have also confirmed this crop inside the surrounding
town-walls, in the gardens that adorned the houses, but especially in
those peripheral districts around the Amphitheater.
Here, with the same techniques
of cultivation before the big eruption, have been installed
the autochtonous vines Piedirosso
and Sciascinoso, selected on the
escort of archaeological recoveries, botanical, bibliographical and
iconographical studies conducted on the ancient Pompeian
frescos.
Within the vineyard of the Foro
Boario, the greatest one, in front of the ruins of the Amphitheater
and next to the Palæstra
(Gymnasium),
there’s the ancient vinary cell: a small building with 10
buried doli, big containers in terracotta where the
trial of the wine-making took place.
From
official classification, Villa dei Misteri
is a red Pompeiano IGT. The
grapes is constituted by Piedirosso
for 90% and Sciascinoso
for 10%. The vintage took place in
the second half October of 2001. It has been distilled for twelve
months in barrique and for others 6
months in bottle. The perfume is
complex, ample, intense and persistent, with spiced signs and of wood
fruits. The taste is winding, balanced, structured.
On
29th of April 2003 has been organized at the Hotel
Cavalieri Hilton in Rome a presentation of the project and
the tasting of the wine, directed by the Associazione
Italiana Sommelier (Ais).
In that occasion has been
banished an auction conducted by an
experienced auctioneer of Finarte-Semenzato
whose proceeds will be reinvested for the restauration of the ancient
vinary cell in the vineyard of the Foro Boario.
